With the roll out of the NBN we are hearing many incredible stories from our customers about the advice they have received from their Telcos. From massively over priced phone systems through to out right lies. The NBN rollout out is leaving many business owners scratching their heads about the advice they are receiving. Some of the myths (should we call them lies?) can have a serious impact on your wallet so lets set the record straight and get NBN Phone System Myths revealed.
It is true that the Telstra Copper lines will be cut off eventually. But its nonsense that you will lose your numbers if you don’t change to the NBN immediately. The NBN copper cut off wont happen until 18 months after your site is declared ready for NBN service. If your site is declared Ready For Service, you have 18 months to arrange an NBN connection and to work out what you are going to do with your phone lines.
That said we highly recommend you dont leave changing to the NBN to the last minute. We recommend switching well before your disconnection date, as it may take time to process your order. This will give you time to allow for installation delays and number porting which can take up to 12 weeks. Moving to the NBN earlier also gives you time to iron out any problems with your NBN service. Its worth allowing some extra time as NBN services can take a while to get connected, especially in Multi Tenanted Commercial Premises.
That is complete and utter nonsense. ISDN phone line’s have nothing to do with the NBN. Telstra has decided, independent of the NBN, that they want to exit ISDN services by 2022. Yes thats right 2022…5 years away. That gives you a lot of time to work out a plan to move to an alternate Phone technology. ISDN services will continue to work after the NBN copper cut off.
In many cases your existing phone system can be adapted or modified to carry phone lines over the NBN. Using a PSTN Phone line replacement technology, called SIP Trunks will allow you to use your current phone system. Most Phone Systems sold in the past 7 years are SIP compatible, with the installation of a SIP card into the Phone System. For system’s that cannot take a SIP card, there are external devices called an ATA that can be added to a phone system to allow them to make call using SIP trunks.
The good news is that an SIP card is usually a lot less than the cost of a new system..typically under $2000 installed and an 8 Line ATA would be around $800 installed.
Yes there will be some older phone systems that need to be replaced because they are simply too old, or where its cheaper to get a new system than a SIP card. Contact us and we can advise you to the dollar, on the cost of any of these options.
Wrong. We have seen quotes from well known companies quoting over $1000 per handset for a new Phone System. Its also pretty common to lock you into a 60 month contract. You don’t need to pay anything like that for a new PBX and you don’t need to lock into any Phone System contract at all.
We were recently handed a 12 handset quote given to a hearing assistance centre, for $33000. And we also saw a another 9 handset system where the quote was $11000 locked in for 60 months.
The stark reality is that a brand new Hosted PBX Phone System, with all the bells and whistle you will need, starts at around $200 per handset including GST & Installation. Our No Contract Phone System quotes saved these clients thousands of dollars.
Wrong. Numbers from any carrier can be ported from your existing provider to any another provider. Porting can take up to 12 weeks but numbers typically port over in around 8 weeks.
Thats not right. In most cases switching to Hosted PBX or SIP Trunks, once you have an NBN connection, will save the average SME hundreds of dollars per month. The call rates on these services are typically half the standard Telstra rates and the line rentals are $10 per line. You can get an unlimited call plan from $50 per line per month, so the savings over your existing services can be significant.

Its worth speaking to an expert and having a plan in place. It doesn’t mean you need to commit immediately but its ideal to have a plan in place for transitioning your phone system to the NBN.
